"Feng shui" is a system of arranging objects for optimal harmony and balance within a space to ensure a peaceful, healthy, and uplifting environment. Because water has both meditative and active qualities, an outdoor fountain is a key element when applying Feng Shui to your garden. You could choose a fountain with Asian characteristics such as a bamboo fountain, however, a traditional European design wall fountain could serve the purpose equally well.

When assessing your patio or garden, it is important to remember that in Feng Shui, all parts of the space have a symbolic meaning. There are many different schools of Feng Shui, but all have some form of template that divides space into areas that govern one's life, including fame, health, friends, love, money, and more. In placing a garden fountain - which is said to facilitate the flow of chi (life energy), most auspicious placement would be in the north, east, or southeast areas of your garden.

Natural materials such as slate, bamboo, or copper are all in keeping with Feng Shui principles. In particular, a bamboo fountain combines water and wood energy. Popular Zen fountains made of a slab of stone such as slate and metal are understated, reflect the idea of calm and balance, and are available as freestanding or wall fountains. Whatever style you prefer, make sure the water in your garden fountain is always kept fresh, flowing and free of debris.
